I lived in Manchester for three weeks (March 11-31) while I visited two different schools, Fred Longworth High School and Ladybridge High School. They are close together and just about a 20-minute train ride out of Manchester. What can I say about Manchester? I feel like it’s the kind of city where local British people go on a weekend trip. Not super touristy, but there’s a lot of really cool restaurants, pubs, and coffee shops to go to. They also have the Manchester soccer (football) teams as well though I wasn’t able to go to a game. You have to be a member apparently to get into a game. Though I’m not really that into soccer, I definitely would’ve gone to one, if it would’ve been a possibility.
My time was basically split up into three weeks. The first week, unfortunately, I was pretty sick with a pretty bad cold so I didn’t do much. But luckily, I stayed in a fantastic hotel - Wilde Aparthotels - during this portion of the trip so it was nice to be at home for the day that I couldn’t go anywhere. It took a while to get over that cold, but finally I mostly did. The one touristy thing I did that week was go on a short boat tour down a canal in the city.
I think the boat tour gives a great view of the old and new architecture. I think the new architecture is quite cool in Manchester.
During that first week there were also teacher strikes going on. My teacher friend Lucy, who I was working with that week, was striking on Wednesday and Thursday. So, since she was not in school, she invited me to lunch on Wednesday in Manchester. Though I was a bit sick, I did want to squeeze in as much time with her as possible, since my visit to the school was limited due to my sickness and the strikes. So we went and ate at a cool, coffee shop called Takk. She told me about a few cool places to go while I’m in Manchester as well, which I did visit a few during my time there.
The second weekend I was there, my friend Tara from London came up for a visit in Manchester. We had a lovely time seeing some of the sites in Manchester. Here are a few pics from her visit.
And then, after Tara left, my friend Dave came, and we explored a bit more. I included the Manchester things in my “Dave came to visit” post here. But it was really fun to explore the city with my friends!
