Thursday, January 27 I took a day trip to Brighton Beach. It’s only a little over an hour of a ride from Bromley, and my Airbnb host suggested it since it’s a popular place where lots of folks go on vacation. So why not go? I did take the day off from going into high school simply because I felt like I have a pretty good handle on what is going on there, and I am not gonna have another chance to see Brighton Beach.
I’m not sure that a weekday in January is the best time to go since basically nothing was open and it was freezing cold. (I guess that’s what I was expecting, but still…). I get the sense that Brighton does have a pretty big gay culture with clubs and bars and stuff but obviously none of that was open during the day on a Thursday. But my plan was just to walk around to have a look around the town. I actually like the inside part of town better than I do the beachside. The beach is made of rocks, which is new and different. I don’t think I’ve ever seen a beach like that. So that was cool. The inside streets have amazing murals all over.
And I got a lot of steps in because I walked from Brighton to Hove, which is just the next town over. They have these cool beach huts that are brightly painted, which apparently are pretty popular and people take pictures of them a lot.
I really enjoyed the walk back because again I walked in town and not along the beach. The beach was just very underwhelming to me. I don’t know. It just wasn’t very inviting. But there is an old rusted out thing that used to be the west pier and it’s no longer that. It’s kind of haunting. So I walked by that and took pictures.
My goal was to go eat lunch at this place called the Lucky Beach Café because I looked at it online and it looked cute. I’ve also discovered that it’s good to have a goal of a place in mind so that for one thing I’ll be motivated to walk further, and also, I won’t be wandering aimlessly. So I walked there and I had fried fish tacos and chips for lunch, the closest thing I’ve actually had yet to fish and chips. It was all just OK. I also ordered a beer called Lucky Saint, which I learned later is a non-alcoholic beer. Lol. Did not mean to do that, but it was good nonetheless.
Then I walk to the Brighton Beach pier which is I guess exact way what you might expect from a beach pier, or at least the ones I think about that are in cold weather areas (think that 80s movie Big with Tom Hanks). It had a bunch of amusement park rides on it and arcade and things like that. But it was all closed because it’s winter and kids are in school. So it had a haunting feel to it that I didn’t really enjoy. Plus they need to do some major painting because it looked really old. It’s clear that this place had a really big heyday, I don’t know, maybe 20 or 30 years ago. But I walked about 18,000 steps all around and by about 2 o’clock I was really tired and not feeling great. So I walked back up to the metro station and got the train back.
