I've made it to Rwanda!

Updated: Jun 18, 2023

May 29-June 19, 2023, My colleague, Dr. Lisa Wilkinson from the Philosophy Department at Nebraska Wesleyan University and I led a study abroad experience with five NWU students to study post-genocide Rwanda. I am sharing those experiences here.

I got to Rwanda on Tuesday morning, May 30, where I met my colleague Lisa and our students, who got here the night before. Today was a day of getting acquainted with our new living arrangements, each other, and our on-the-ground program guide, Merveille. She is an upper-level college student studying tourism. I don't fully understand it, but she works for an organization in Rwanda that is also connected to the organization we use to plan our trip, EDU Africa. So that is how we have come to have her as our tour guide while we are in Rwanda.

Merveille led us through a power point of things that were basically like onboarding, but also an introduction to being in Rwanda. After that, we went to eat lunch at a lovely restaurant called Heaven. Then we walked around Kigali with her to get a better understanding of the town. It is cool that we are staying in walking distance of the city center. We are close to everything, so the students and Lisa and I can have freedom to walk around in the evenings when we are done with the day's activities. This is our onboarding meeting, where we also had a Kinyarwanda lesson (the main language in Rwanda), then photos of our trip to the market, and also my and Lisa's apartment. I love our porch - we have spent quite a bit of time out there.
