On Thanksgiving day, we transferred from Cape Coast to Accra. I said goodbye to one of my new best friends, Delali, and her husband, John Paul. Delali and John Paul gave me a parting gift of a sash made of kente fabric that they used in their wedding. It was such a thoughtful gift that I will treasure forever. There are some pics of all of us here, including my other very close friend and colleague John-Doe. And one of my friend who works at Sasakawa, James, and the kitty who always followed him around. And me and Danelle in our 15-seater van that we rented to take us to Accra!
I also said goodbye to my friend Felix, who works at the guest house I was staying at.
John-Doe went with us to Accra, so I didn’t say goodbye to him just yet. We left around 10 and got there around 3. The most exciting part of the day was that we watched Ghana play football in the World Cup! Though they lost, it was really a wonderful way to spend Thanksgiving, to be at a beautiful bar in a relaxed setting, watching football with local Ghanaians.
In the evening, we went to a couple of bars in the Osu area where we were staying. It was a lovely day, though I was truly sad to leave Cape Coast.
Friday, the day after Thanksgiving, we had another set of grand adventures! We started off the day by dropping John-Doe at the bus stop so he could make his way back to Cape Coast. Then we went to the W.E.B. Du Bois Centre for PanAfrican Culture - what an amazing social justice advocate he was. Funnily enough we also saw my friend Brent there who had come to the DrumGhana show on Tuesday.
Next, we went shopping on the streets of Accra at Makola Market - one of the main open-air markets in town.
Then we walked down to Black Star Square to see some of the historical monuments, and the Arts Center to do some more shopping.
It was unbelievably hot, so after that we took a taxi back to our area in Osu and had a beer to cool off and just sit for a bit. Then we got ready and went to eat dinner at this awesome outdoor live music club called +233, which is the country code for Ghana. We sat outside and enjoyed listening to a really great cover band. This was one of my favorite things we did while in Accra!
