A Concert at Cape Coast Castle

This also happened this past week. After practice on Monday evening, Antoinette invited me to go to a concert that was being held at Cape Coast Castle. It was by a group called the Twerammpon Traditionals. Antoinette was in this group several years ago playing drums, which is kind of awesome. They are celebrating their 40th year of being in existence. Their concert was AMAZING. From what I heard, their music is a fusion of traditional Ghanaian music and rhythms combined with jazz. The white people are from Denmark, and a major part of this group is collaboration between Ghanaian musicians and others all over the world. Their website is here. I think their music is awesome. We are going to hear them play hopefully Friday and Saturday as well. Enjoy a few clips from the concert. Also, note the amazing drummers on that one clip. These musicians are crazy good!

I also have to add that it is a wonderful thing that a place that was built to be used for such awful things so many years ago is a place that has been reclaimed and is being use for good and celebratory things now.

Here are a few pics and videos of the group. Check out their website and their Facebook page as well.

The drumming in that last clip is so fantastic that I would have been happy had the keyboard and sax not started up 30 seconds in. Nothing wrong with what they added, but the drumming by itself was mesmerizing. Who needs melody and harmony when the rhythm is that amazing?
