I had two great experiences this past weekend! The first was a tour of Elmina Castle. It was built in 1482 by the Portuguese originally as a trade settlement to store exports like gold. But the Dutch took it over and it became a place for trading enslaved Africans around the mid1600s to the early 1800s. It’s also the oldest European building in existence south of the Sahara desert.
The second cool thing I did this weekend was going to the fishing area in Elmina where everyone docks their boats and brings the fish from the ocean. It was amazing to see everything that goes on there. I was enamored with it! I’ve posted a short video but you can’t really grasp how much was going on. So cool to watch all of that. Also, the smell was unbelievably fishy and like nothing I’ve ever smelled before. But that’s part of it!
In the pictures is my friend Jonas who took me to both places. His family has a fishing business so he was telling me a lot about how it’s done, though he himself is not part of the business.
