NZULENZU Village
This past weekend I went to the Western region with my friend Jonas. The main attraction was going to see this village that is built on a river. It’s called Nzelenzu. Quite a unique place and a really great visit.
It takes about 20 minutes to ride the water "taxi" out to the village. It's a beautiful ride out. Here are some of the pics of that.
It's just such a unique place. Here are some pictures of the village.
This is a video of the tour guide taking us through the village. He lives here with his family. The place we were walking was the main "street," and each family has their own row.
This is the school building. Students go to school here up to junior high. If they choose to go beyond that, they have to go on a boat to the main land.
This is the one shared bathroom area for the town. Everyone uses the restroom here. And each family row has a shower "room" that they use. The bucket is the water source.
This shed out on the water is where the water gods live. These are the gods from the traditional religion. They pour libations and have a ceremony to the water gods around April 15 every year. The other building is one of the 3 Christian churches in the village. There may also a Muslim one...I can't quite remember. But I know that most people around here practice Christianity, some also do the traditional religion, some do the traditional religion only, and some are Muslim.
We stayed at a place called the Ankobra Beach Resort in Axim. It was so cute and right on the beach!
ANKASA NATIONAL PARK
The second part of our trip was to Ankasa National Park where we saw a bamboo canopy. That was a highlight, anyway. We also took a pretty extensive hike into the center of the forest. where the final destination was the big tree. It was kind of disappointing for the difficulty of the hike we did. It was a bit more than I bargained for to be honest. The trip to get there was something else as well. But if you don’t try, how will you know?
Here are a few pics from the bamboo canopy, the big tree, our meal afterward, and a beautiful sunset.
This is a video I took when we got to the canopy. I had gotten stung by 2 wasps at the beginning of the trek, and one was on my lip and it swelled up pretty badly. It was ok in the end, but what a way to start this hike....
Here is a video of getting to the park from the main road. The roads here are no joke, especially when it rains. Watch the whole thing. That baby...I was nervous for it! But they made it safe and sound.
The next morning, it was beautiful weather so Jonas and I did a photo shoot on the beach. I kind of love these pictures! And I love my hair in them!
TAKORADI
On the way home, for the last part of our trip, we toured around the pretty large city of Takoradi where we saw a power plant built on the biggest ship I’ve ever seen. This was on the grounds of the Ghanaian Navy base, where an officer gave us a tour as well. We also saw another fishing market where people fish commercially. And we had a lovely lunch at a restaurant by the beach called Vienna City.
What a great weekend trip!
